how-to-get-started-at-a-craps-table

The craps table can feel intimidating, especially when the chips are flying and everyone’s shouting. But once you know a few simple things, you’ll know how to get started at a craps table like a champ.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you approach the table with total confidence.

Step 1: Check the Puck

As you approach the table, look for the black and white puck sitting near the middle of the layout.

  • If the puck says OFF – this is the come-out roll. A great time to buy in and place your first bet.
  • If the puck says ON – the shooter is in the middle of a round. Wait for the dice to be returned before buying in.

🧠 Why it matters: You’re not allowed to toss money on the table while the dice are active. But you’ll soon learn how to get started at a craps table.

Step 2: Wait for the Dice to Be Centered, Then Buy In

Once the shooter rolls and the dice are returned to the center of the table, that’s your cue.

Place your cash directly on the felt in front of your position—never hand it to the dealer—and say:

“Change only, please.”

The dealer will announce the amount, hand it to the boxman, and give you chips in return. Don’t rush—there’s a rhythm to it.

🧠 Know Your Spot:

  • The chip tray in front of you is your area for storing chips not in play.
  • Place your drink on the ledge underneath the rail, never on the chip rail or playing surface.

🚫 And don’t drink over the felt. It’s expensive and easy to stain.

I always turn slightly to the side to take a sip. It’s totally normal—and no one’s going to steal your chips while you take a second to hydrate.

Step 3: Say Hello and Find a Spot

If it’s a crowded table, don’t wedge yourself in. It’s polite to say something like:

“Hey, mind if I join in here?”

The dealer may point you to an open spot or ask you to wait for the next round if things are tight. Most players will happily make a little room, especially if you’re respectful and friendly.

Step 4: Make Your First Bet – The Pass Line

Only place this bet when the puck says OFF.

The Pass Line is the most popular bet on the table, and it’s the best way to get started. It’s marked right along the edge of the table in front of you.

Just place your bet directly on the Pass Line before the shooter rolls. No need to announce it—just set your chips down.

🪙 Minimum Bet Info:
Look at the placard near the dealer for the table’s minimum—often $5, $10, or $15 depending on the casino. Your Pass Line bet must meet or exceed this amount.

Once the puck is OFF and you’re on the Pass Line, you’re officially part of the game.

Step 5: Know What NOT to Do

Avoid these beginner mistakes:

  • ❌ Don’t hand money to the dealer
  • ❌ Don’t toss anything onto the table mid-roll
  • ❌ Don’t reach across other players
  • ❌ Don’t drink over the felt
  • ❌ Don’t stack random side bets before you understand them
